I was having an interesting conversation the other day. The idea was brought up that in the training circles of empowering the horse through liberty or positive reinforcement trainings, the word respect has almost transformed into an avoided or negative term. As if the only way to gain respect is through domineering behaviors.

Softness has great strength. Something as tiny and harmless as a rain drop, can in time collect and with the help of gravity, cut through the biggest and hardest stones. Respect doesn't have to equate to harshness.

One of the most beautiful components to any relationship, be it with horses or humans, is a shared mutual respect for one another. When that respect is imbalanced, that is usually when issues start to arise. Gaining respect and being respectful is so valuable when practiced together and is at the heart of harmony.
